Awkward Space Storage Solution

When he built our house in 1949, Harry Rocke was not going to do what everyone else was doing. He built this home with creativity and out of the box thinking. His ingenuity is evident all around this home. An example can be found in the kitchen. One of the walls would be left blank by most, but Harry looked at it as an opportunity for functional space. He installed these narrow cabinets to store extra dishes and things in. It's really cool, but has one major flaw.... What can you do with such and awkward space? Here is a simple solution to make those dark corner accesible.

That little cubby-hole is just about the most awkward spaces. I could shove things back there but they would inevitably be forgotten due to the inaccessible nature of the space. I hated seeing it wasted, but what else could be done. Eventually we plan to blow that entire wall out to open the kitchen up to the living room, but until then, I thought I would just have to tolerate the dark tunnel.

It was a completely accidental coincidence that I came upon a solution for the problem. I had crafted this box out of pallets for a different project, but ended up not using it. Discouraged with the lack of progress I set the thing on that tiny counter so it was out of the way.

I kept meaning to get rid of it, but never got around to it and eventually it started to collect stuff. Cookbooks, lunch bags, a box of tissues found their way inside this box.

Well, I was cleaning the kitchen one day and pushed the box back into the tunnel and had this revelation!

The box fit perfectly inside the space and suddenly gives function to an otherwise awful area. Now I can slide the box out to get the things I need and slide it back in to hide said things. Pallet boxes are very easy to make, and I love using them as a cheap and stylish solution.
