What is farmhouse style? Is it wallpaper and wood? Is it mason jars and burlap? Is it old things or new? This is something I’ve thought about a lot lately. I know what I love when I see it, but struggle to grasp how to replicate it in our own home. Anyone else relate? Some projects I’ve done fail to achieve the farmhouse look I’m usually going for, but some, however, match it perfectly. Those are the ones that make the biggest impact on a space and literally change the entire look of the room.

When I found this big ugly bookcase at a garage sale it was just that: big and ugly. For a cheap price the woman was practically begging me to take it from her, and, though my van was already packed with our Bentwood Rocking Chair and an American Style Upholstered chair, I decided to take the old thing and see what could be done with it. I saw the potential it held.

It was very scratched and scuffed up and dirty as can be, but I loved the detail on the top and on the doors.

Another plus was the height. Our living room has been lacking in that department as the couch, console, chairs, all cap off at about 4 feet high. Then there are a few things on the walls above them, but that only creates a sectioned off look. Like, “here is the visual area that is dedicated to wall décor, and, oh, careful not to cross that line, here is the visual area for furniture. Something needed to intersect the space in between to draw the eye upward.

The first task in remodeling the big guy was sanding….and sanding….and sanding out the majority of the scuffs, especially the deep ones in the side. I left some for the charm.

I painted the outside white with a homemade chalk paint recipe, and the inside blue, making sure to tape where needed. It was helpful that two of the shelves and doors came off to allow an even coat all around.

Lastly, I distressed the edges slightly so that it looks like it’s been here for decades. It’s those little imperfections that make it oh, so charming.

Reassembling the whole thing took no time at all. And, next is my favorite part of any project: stepping back to see the results. *Gasp!* It turned out exactly how I envisioned (which doesn’t always happen) and filled the space beautifully! Yay!

I don’t know if I’ve really figured out what it takes to achieve that farmhouse look, but this bookcase brought me one step closer to be sure.
