Freshen Up Your Table for the Holidays

You have probably begun to realize October is basically over and Thanksgiving/Christmas are right around the corner. That means lots of family gatherings. Presents, hugs, stories, and laughter all come with the season, but what is a real holiday party without good food? And, for good food, you need a huge table. Well, shouldn’t the table then be gorgeous if it’s to be used by all those relatives? Or you could just have a table that needs freshening up in general.

That was the case for this beauty. My client had just built a gorgeous coastal inspired home and wanted her huge dining room table and chairs updated to match the light colors.

I couldn’t wait to get started because I had a fun new toy to use….a Homeright paint sprayer!

That’s right, I finally got one! After hearing so many people rave about how awesome and time saving they are and considering I’d be painting chairs and a table for someone else and would have spent double the time worrying about brush strokes and getting even coverage on the chairs; it was a good time to get one.

So, here is how to freshen up your table for the holidays!

Start off right by sanding it all down. It always seems like an unnecessary step until you go to brush the first stroke of paint on and it slides right off.

Now, do your prep work, which really is half the job right there. My client wanted to preserve the rush seats of the chairs so I put a garbage bag over each seat...

...and taped off where the wood met the rush.

I’ll be honest, I kind of hate prep work and had a little resentment towards the sprayer while I spent all this time putting up tons of plastic to prevent splatters. At this point, though, I hadn’t even tried it out, so I didn’t realize that with a sprayer you’ll spend a little extra time prepping, but save quadruple that amount of time in the actual painting. Worth it.

Since the dining room table could not be moved outside to where the plastic was set up, I did not use the sprayer and started by brushing on the primer.

Then was the moment of truth; the big debut of Mr. Homeright Sprayer and its cue to the spotlight! I did have to thin the paint just a wee bit and was pleased at how easy it was to test consistency. They give a little tool that makes it easy as pie to get the right thickness.

My literal words when I pulled the trigger for the first time were, “Ooh la la!” It was that pretty.

The sprayer did exactly what I’d hoped it would and that was put on an even layer of paint over all those spindly parts quickly.

You’ll probably have to do several coats because the paint is thinned out, but who cares when it goes on so easy, right?

Before finishing up, I distressed the edges by sanding them a bit and sprayed Polycrylic over all the pieces. The table got three layers of Polycrylic to make it easy to wash and protect it from my client’s precious grandkids.

Now, when this dining room becomes filled with guests and family for the holidays, there won’t be a hulking, dark table in the center, but a light, creamy one giving cheer to all. Ok, probably no one will notice, but it does look great with this fresh new lease on life and absolutely compliments the already bright room.

I couldn’t help but snag a few decorations from around the house to use as a coastal centerpiece.

On a totally unrelated side note....Aren't those barn doors AH-MAZING? I was crushing on them the whole time I was there.

I’m so happy with how quickly and even the paint came out of the Homeright sprayer and would recommend one for anyone planning to do any furniture painting.
